Not all roads lead to Rome but to Kuala Lumpur

For expats, not all roads lead to Rome but to Kuala Lumpur

Sure, we love Rome. Art, history, culture throughout the city. Not to mention the lovely climate and delicious food. Did we say gelato yet?

Surprisingly, Rome was rated the worst city for expats to live in, a recent poll shows. The city was called “unfriendly”, with 31% of expats living there believing “the locals generally do not like foreign residents”.

Then what is the best city for expats to live in? Kuala Lumpur! The poll, carried out by a Munich-based network of expats, shows that the Malaysian capital is by far the best place to work and live. Four criteria were taken into account: quality of life, ease of settling in, personal finance and working abroad. Kuala Lumpur ticks all those boxes for a majority of expats who have been there (or still are).

Four European cities make the top 10 of best expat destinations: second placed Malaga, Prague (7), Basel (9) and Madrid (10). But nothing compares to Kuala Lumpur, being described as “welcome and affordable” or even “the best place to retire”.
